Ares was born in the mountains of Serpent Mountains on Dregar. When his mother died giving birth to him, his father raised him as a shepherd. All his life he was taught to fear the wolves, while the dog was his best friend. Early in life, Ares had an encounter with a pack of wolves while moving a herd of sheep. Naturally, Ares took arms against the wolves, but he was sorely outmatched against the pack. He lost the entire herd and almost his life. He awoke several weeks later in his home. After regaining his health and clearing adolescence, Ares swore a vengeance against the pack of wolves who nearly killed him. While searching the forests far from his home, he encountered a large brown bear. Ares had never seen a bear before and was inclined to see if it was friendly. The bear was putting on fat in anticipation for its winter sleep, and was startled by Ares' approach. The bear defended itself against its perceived invader and mauled Ares, injuring him severely. Ironically, it was a wolf who was to be his savior. A mother wolf happened upon the unconcious Ares and took him back to her den, where she had just had a litter of pups. When Ares awoke several days later, the mother brought him meat. Overcoming his initial fear of the beast, Ares accepted in his weakened condition. Slowly, the mother wolf nursed Ares back to health. Months later, while leaving the den for the last time, Ares, conquering his urges to find the pack that had scarred his past, and wondering what drove the instincs of animals to nearly kill a child and save him years later, began to wander, with no more purpose in his life. He didn't notice until days later the young wolf pup following him. One of the mother's pups had followed him from the den. When he tried to take the pup back to its mother, he found the den abandoned. After trying in vain to find the mother wolf, he took the pup for his own, and gave it a name. It has been by his side ever since. He now wanders the world, communing with all animals and defending the woods.
